For the past several years, the Lenape Elementary fourth graders have gone to St. Mary’s and Holy Trinity Cemeteries to replace worn flags on the graves of the brave men and women who served in the armed forces in the United States. Before we go to the cemeteries, the students gather in front of the school while their peers fold the flag. As they are folding the flag, other classmates are narrating the meaning of each fold. Then the flag is raised on the flag pole. Mr. Skamai plays TAPS as we end that portion of the day. Next, the students gather to view a video entitled, “All About America” as well as one about Memorial Day.
We coordinate with the American Legion to meet us there. They explain the service that is given to any fallen soldier in battle or in civilian service. The flag is folded and presented. That is followed by a 21 gun salute. The students then replace all worn flags with brand new flags. The students are always respectful of the job they are doing.
